1. Location

  • Mount Kailash

    • Located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

    • Altitude: 6,638 meters (21,778 feet).

    • It is part of the Transhimalaya range near Lake Mansarovar.

    • Visa and special permission from the Chinese government are required for the pilgrimage.

  • Adi Kailash

    • Situated in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, India, near the Indo-China border.

    • Altitude: 5,945 meters (19,505 feet).

    • No visa is required; the pilgrimage is entirely within Indian territory.

  • Mount Kailash

    • Considered the original and eternal abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati.

    • Revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon religion.

    • Believed to be the axis mundi—the cosmic center of the universe.

  • Adi Kailash

    • Also known as Chhota Kailash or Baba Kailash.

    • Mythologically considered a replica or manifestation of Mount Kailash within Indian borders.

    • A sacred site for devotees who cannot travel to Mount Kailash.

  • Mount Kailash

    • Access has become restricted in recent years due to strained Indo-China relations.

    • Trek is physically demanding and requires international travel.

  • Adi Kailash

    • More easily accessible for Indian pilgrims.

    • Gained popularity after PM Narendra Modi’s visit in 2023, where he meditated at Parvati Sarovar nearby.

Both are part of the Panch Kailash, a group of five holy Kailash peaks:
