The SA20 2026 season witnessed a breathtaking display of power-hitting as Dewald Brevis and Sherfane Rutherford launched an extraordinary late assault to propel Pretoria Capitals to a commanding 85-run victory over MI Cape Town. The explosive duo smashed six consecutive sixes across two overs, turning a competitive contest into a one-sided affair.

Batting first in the eighth match of the tournament on December 31, Pretoria Capitals were placed at a decent but not dominant 148/4 after 17 overs. However, the final three overs completely altered the course of the match, as Brevis and Rutherford added a stunning 72 runs, pushing the total to a daunting 220/5.

The onslaught began in the 18th over when Brevis took Corbin Bosch apart, smashing the final two deliveries for six. What followed was absolute carnage in the 19th over, with Rutherford dismantling Dwaine Pretorius by hitting four consecutive sixes. Mixing brute force with smart placement, Rutherford punished slower balls and low full tosses, leaving MI Cape Town reeling.

Brevis finished unbeaten on 36 off just 13 balls, striking four sixes, while Rutherford produced a sensational cameo of 47 runs at a strike rate of 313.33, one of the most destructive innings of the tournament so far.

🔹 Capitals dominate with ball as well

Defending 220, Pretoria Capitals were ruthless with the ball. MI Cape Town collapsed to 135 all out in just 14.2 overs, never looking comfortable in the steep chase.

Rutherford capped off a dream outing by starring with the ball too, picking up four wickets in three overs, while skipper Keshav Maharaj claimed three wickets, applying pressure through the middle overs.

The emphatic win marked Pretoria Capitals’ first victory of the season after two earlier losses, significantly boosting their net run rate and confidence moving forward.

🔹 Player of the Match: Sherfane Rutherford

Rutherford was deservedly named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance. Speaking after the game, he revealed the simple yet effective approach he shared with Brevis during the death overs:
“We just decided to react to whatever they bowled. The field placements didn’t matter much—wherever the ball was, we trusted our shape and went hard. It came off really well.”
