Three dead after building collapse in Delhi’s Paharganj, rescue ops underway
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta condoled the loss of lives and ordered a probe into the incident, assuring that strict action will be ensured against the culprits.
New Delhi: A building under construction collapsed on Saturday in the Paharganj area of the capital, leading to the tragic deaths of three individuals. Rescue operations are currently underway as teams search for any survivors trapped under the debris.
According to officials, the collapse occurred near Krishna Hotel on Ara Kansa Road, where the side wall of an under-construction basement gave way, triggering the incident. Four fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Government Response
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and directed authorities to launch a comprehensive probe into the matter. She also assured strict action against those found responsible for the incident.
“May God grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Weather Conditions a Contributing Factor?
The incident occurred amid unsettled weather conditions in Delhi-NCR. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast thunderstorms and rain for the region on Saturday, with the maximum temperature expected to reach around 42°C.
By evening, gusty winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall lashed the city, offering relief from the recent heatwave but also causing widespread damage.
Series of Structural Failures
This marks the second building collapse in two days in the area. On Friday evening, another structure on Arakashan Road collapsed. The Delhi Fire Services received a call about that incident at 6:05 p.m., prompting an emergency response.
Reports also surfaced of tree uprootings and property damage in parts of Noida and across Delhi-NCR, as a result of the sudden weather shift.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are currently assessing the structural integrity of nearby buildings and reviewing compliance with construction norms. Further details are awaited as rescue operations continue.
