Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Update: Viaducts, Stations & Signals
Overview & Context
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR)—India’s inaugural bullet train project spanning ~508 km—is currently under rapid construction. With Japanese collaboration and domestic manufacturing, the route will connect Mumbai’s BKC with Ahmedabad and other key cities via 12 stations.

Viaduct Construction Milestones
- 300 km of viaducts have been completed as of May 2025, including 257.4 km using Full Span Launching Method (FSLM) and 37.8 km using Span-by-Span (SBS) techniques.
- Construction has also progressed on 383 km of pier foundations, 401 km of track foundations, and 326 km of girder casting.
- Environmental protection measures include installing over 300,000 noise barriers along viaduct sections.
Station Building Progress
- At Vapi station (Gujarat segment), civil work is complete, and interior setup—roof structure, electrical systems, lounges, escalators—is underway.
- Work at Mumbai’s underground BKC station has reached 76% excavation completion (depth ~26 m), with base-slab casting, batching, and concrete testing in progress.
- Six out of eight Gujarat stations are structurally finished, while three elevated stations in Maharashtra continue under construction.
Signalling & Systems Contract
- A consortium of DRA Infracon & Siemens JV has received the Letter of Acceptance for the signalling and telecom Package S‑1, including design, installation, integration, testing, and maintenance over seven years. The contract value is ₹4,140 cr.
Timeline & What Lies Ahead
- Partial trial operations on the Gujarat stretch are anticipated in 2026; full corridor operations are expected between 2028–2030.
- Track-laying has begun: ~157 km of reinforced concrete track beds are complete in Gujarat.
- Advanced infrastructure includes three mega tunnels (incl. 7 km under Thane Creek), 14 river bridges, 7 steel bridges, and 5 prestressed concrete bridges.
- Ongoing work includes casting yards, fabrication facilities, and rolling-stock depots in Maharashtra & Gujarat.
