Rajnath Singh Meets China’s Defence Minister in Bishkek, Discusses Regional Security

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday held a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting in Bishkek.

The high-level interaction focused on regional security, stability, and strengthening military communication channels, at a time when both countries are cautiously working towards improving ties after years of tension.

Context: Relations After the 2020 LAC Standoff

The meeting comes against the backdrop of strained India-China relations following the 2020 clashes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, which marked one of the most serious military confrontations between the two nations in decades.

Since then, both sides have engaged in multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks aimed at disengagement and de-escalation. While some progress has been achieved, trust deficits remain, making such high-level meetings crucial.
