Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic landslide near Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir, that killed 32 pilgrims and injured 20. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities providing all possible assistance to the victims.
PM Modi on Vaishno Devi Landslide
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the loss of lives in the Vaishno Devi landslide in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday along the Adhkuwari stretch, about halfway through the 12-km trek from Katra town to the sacred hilltop shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi.

In a heartfelt post on social media platform X, PM Modi said:
The Prime Minister assured that the government and local authorities are extending all possible help to the injured and affected families.
Death Toll and Injuries
According to officials, the death toll has risen to 32, while at least 20 others sustained injuries in the landslide triggered by relentless heavy rainfall. Several of the injured are being treated at hospitals in Katra and Reasi, and their condition is being closely monitored.
The landslide struck suddenly around 3 pm on Tuesday, when boulders, rocks, and debris came crashing down the steep mountainside. Pilgrims and local staff on the route were caught completely off guard.
Yatra Suspended
The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage was immediately suspended after the incident. Authorities revealed that:
- The Himkoti trek route had already been closed earlier in the day due to heavy rains.
- The old traditional route remained open until about 1:30 pm.
- Following the landslide at Adhkuwari, authorities suspended the yatra completely until further notice, prioritizing safety and rescue operations.
Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and paramilitary personnel, have been deployed to clear debris, assist survivors, and recover bodies.
Rescue Operations Underway
Officials stated that clearing the path is proving difficult due to continuous rainfall, which has increased the risk of further landslides. Despite the challenges, rescue operations are ongoing with full force.
District officials also confirmed that arrangements are being made to shift stranded pilgrims to safer areas and provide them with food, shelter, and medical care.
Reactions and Significance
The Vaishno Devi shrine is among the most visited Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, attracting millions of devotees each year. This tragic incident has sparked nationwide grief, with political leaders and citizens expressing condolences to the bereaved families.
Experts note that such natural disasters highlight the need for stronger safety measures, including early-warning systems, improved infrastructure on hill routes, and disaster preparedness for pilgrims.
