What Caused the Flight Disruptions? {#cause}

On June 17, 2025, a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) led to extreme weather over Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Delhi.
The region faced:

  • Heavy rain and lightning
  • Wind speeds of 50–70 km/hr
  • Reduced visibility due to dark cloud cover and waterlogging on airport roads

These conditions disrupted both takeoffs and landings, triggering delays and flight diversions.

Which Flights Were Affected? {#affected-flights}

  • Air India reported multiple delays and reroutes.
  • Flights were diverted to Jaipur and Lucknow.
  • Domestic departures, especially towards eastern India and the South, were delayed up to 2 hours.
  • International flights to Southeast Asia were also rescheduled.

Official Passenger Advisory

IGI Airport authority released a statement advising:

  • Check flight status before heading to the airport via airline websites or mobile apps.
  • Allow extra time for travel as approach roads are waterlogged.
  • Contact your airline for rebooking or cancellation support.

Helpline numbers:

  • IGI Airport: +91-124-4797300
  • Air India: 1860 233 1407

Travelers: What You Should Do

  • Reconfirm bookings with airlines before departure.
  • Reach early if flying out today or tomorrow.
  • Carry essentials: snacks, water, power banks in case of delays.
  • Opt for cab aggregators over public transport where roads are flooded.

Important: If your flight is canceled, you’re entitled to full refunds or alternate options under DGCA guidelines.
