New Delhi:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to address what it calls misinformation and confusion allegedly spread by opposition parties regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. According to the party, the initiative aims to explain the purpose, process, and transparency of the SIR exercise, reassuring voters that it follows officially mandated rules and procedures.
Central team to steer outreach
A central coordination team led by BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh has been formed to drive the campaign in states where SIR is underway. The team includes leaders such as K Laxman, Alka Gurjar, OP Dhankhar, Rituraj Sinha, Anirban Ganguly, and K Annamalai. They are responsible for designing the outreach strategy based on data, official documents, and ground-level feedback.
Workshops and grassroots engagement
Team members are touring multiple states to conduct workshops and meetings with party workers, providing them with factual information about the revision process. The BJP is also implementing structured grassroots programmes to ensure accurate information about SIR reaches citizens at the booth level.
BJP accuses opposition of misleading narrative
Party leaders allege that opposition parties are intentionally presenting a distorted view of the SIR process to mislead voters. Tarun Chugh has stated that the BJP is “fully prepared” to counter what it describes as rumours and misinterpretations, instructing cadres to stay in constant touch with voters and clearly communicate the party’s stance.
Booth-level mobilisation
According to BJP functionaries, meetings are being conducted across all organisational levels—from state units to booth committees—in states where the revision is in progress. The party says it will use verified facts and documentary evidence across all platforms to dispel doubts and “present the real picture” of the SIR exercise.
SIR Phase Two across 12 regions
The Election Commission of India is set to conduct the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories. These include:
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands
- Chhattisgarh
- Goa
- Gujarat
- Kerala
- Lakshadweep
- Madhya Pradesh
- Puducherry
- Rajasthan
- Tamil Nadu
- Uttar Pradesh
- West Bengal
Timeline of the revision exercise
As per the notified schedule, printing and training activities were planned from October 28 to November 3, followed by the enumeration phase from November 4 to December 4. Draft electoral rolls will be published on December 9, after which claims and objections may be filed between December 9 and January 8, 2026.
Final rolls by February 2026
The notice and hearing process for verification will run from December 9 to January 31, 2026. The final electoral rolls are expected to be published on February 7, 2026, ahead of upcoming election cycles.
Bihar pilot and subsequent expansion
The first phase of SIR was conducted in Bihar in September as a precursor to the state’s Assembly elections. The broader rollout across 12 additional states and Union Territories forms the second phase of the nationwide exercise.
