Bangladeshi woman arrested for living illegally in India using fake documents and Hindu identity

Dehradun Police have arrested a Bangladeshi woman allegedly living illegally in India by using forged documents and assuming a Hindu identity. The arrest was made under Operation Kalnemi, a special drive targeting individuals residing in India using false identities. The woman, identified as Babli Begum (28), had been living in the Patel Nagar area under the name Bhoomi Sharma.

Entered India During the Pandemic

During police interrogation, Begum—originally from the Gaibandha district of Bangladesh—admitted to crossing the border illegally during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. After staying in several locations across India, she reached Dehradun in 2021.

According to officials, Begum married a local resident in 2022 and subsequently managed to obtain multiple forged Indian identity documents using the alias Bhoomi Sharma.

Fake Documents Recovered

Police recovered several fake Indian documents from her possession, including:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Ayushman card
  • Ration card
  • Voter ID
  • Other identity documents issued in the name Bhoomi Sharma

They also recovered a Bangladeshi identity card revealing her real name, Babli Begum.

A case has been registered under relevant legal provisions for illegal residency and document forgery. She has been formally arrested.

Police are also investigating individuals who may have assisted her in procuring the forged documents, with authorities stating that strict action will follow.

Another Bangladeshi National Detained

In a separate action, police detained another suspected Bangladeshi woman, Bobby Khatun (41), from Kalinda Vihar Phase-2 in Patel Nagar. A resident of Bogura district in Bangladesh, Khatun allegedly entered India illegally in 2023 and had been earning her livelihood through manual labour in Dehradun.

A photocopy of her Bangladeshi passport was recovered. Police confirmed that she has been detained and is being deported to Bangladesh as per procedure.

Last week, police also arrested Mamun Hasan, another Bangladeshi national living in Dehradun under the fake identity of Sachin Chauhan.

Operation Kalnemi: Ongoing Crackdown

Under Operation Kalnemi, authorities have taken action against 17 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Dehradun district so far. Of these, eight individuals using forged documents have been jailed, while nine have been deported to Bangladesh.
