Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal Grace Cannes 2025 for Aranyer Din Ratri Screening

Veteran actresses Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal made a memorable appearance at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, attending the screening of Satyajit Ray’s classic film Aranyer Din Ratri. The screening took place on Day 7 of the festival as part of the Cannes Classics section.

Sharmila Tagore stunned in an elegant green saree, while Simi Garewal walked the red carpet in a graceful ivory dress. The 1970 Bengali film, which features both actresses, was met with admiration and nostalgia during its restored screening.

Standing Ovation for a Timeless Classic

Aranyer Din Ratri received a standing ovation at its premiere. The audience honored the film and its legacy with thunderous applause. Also present at the screening was Saba Pataudi, daughter of Sharmila Tagore.

This marked Simi Garewal’s first appearance at Cannes, while it was Sharmila Tagore’s second time attending the prestigious festival.

Restored in 4K Over Six Years

The restoration of Aranyer Din Ratri was a labor of love, spanning six years. The project was led by American filmmaker Wes Anderson, whose admiration for Satyajit Ray’s work sparked the initiative. Anderson, as a board member of Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation, initiated discussions on preserving the film back in 2019.

The restoration was a collaborative effort between:

  • The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project

  • Film Heritage Foundation

  • Janus Films

  • The Criterion Collection
Funded by the Golden Globe Foundation, the result is a newly restored 4K version of the iconic film.
