The incident, which occurred around 6:30 PM, brought train movement to a halt along the busy 741-kilometre-long route that connects Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. A Konkan Railway spokesperson confirmed that a huge boulder had fallen onto the tracks amid heavy rainfall in the coastal Konkan and Goa region, impacting rail traffic on the Mumbai-Goa route.

Restoration work carried out

Following the landslide, train traffic was suspended temporarily, and the removal of debris was undertaken swiftly. The KR spokesperson said services were restored a few hours later, at around 8:00 PM, after the tracks were cleared.

The spokesperson also informed that only one train had to be regulated due to the incident. Despite the limited regulation, passengers reported that several trains on the Konkan route were running late.

Konkan Railway on landslide, restoration work

A planned work of loose scaling in Veravali Vilavde section was underway with the protection of the site from both sides. During the work, a few boulders were rolled down and infringed the track. However, an emergency block was executed to remove the infringement and protect the site. Moreover, adequate precautions were taken and traffic was restored within two and half an hours from reporting of the incident. Few trains were regulated at arequent announcements were done for the passengers. Adequate catering arrangements were done at Ratnagiri, Vaibhavwadi,Sawant wadi stations, the CPRO of the Konkan Railway said in a statement.

Heavy rainfall across Konkan and Goa

Heavy unseasonal rains lashed the Konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa on Tuesday, contributing to the landslide. The highest rainfall of 121 mm was recorded at Pernem station in Goa, an official said.

Officials noted that the continuous downpour in the region had made the debris removal more challenging, delaying the clearance operations.

IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said several parts of Maharashtra are likely to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and gusty winds between May 21 and 24 due to a developing weather system over the Arabian Sea.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, a cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the Karnataka coast. A low-pressure area is likely to develop over the same region around May 22, which may then move northwards and intensify.

IMD official Shubhangi Bhute said that under the influence of this system, rainfall activity across Maharashtra is likely to increase during the forecast period. Regions expected to be affected include south Konkan, parts of south-central Maharashtra, and Mumbai.

“There is a likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph or even higher,” Bhute added.

Parents, Take Note! WHO Says No Screens for Under-2s, Only 1 Hour for Toddlers

Published

on

In today’s digital age, screens are everywhere. But when it comes to young children, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued clear warnings. According to their new guidelines, children under 2 years old should have zero screen time, and those aged 2–4 should have no more than one hour per day.

WHO’s New Screen Time Guidelines

  • Under 2 years: No screen time at all.
  • 2 to 4 years: Maximum of 1 hour per day, and the less, the better.
These recommendations are part of WHO’s efforts to promote healthy growth and prevent sedentary behavior in early childhood.

Why Zero Screen Time for Under 2?

The first two years of life are crucial for brain development. Face-to-face interactions, physical play, and real-world experiences are essential for building motor skills, language, and social connections. Screens can interfere with these vital early learning experiences.

How Excessive Screen Time Affects Young Children

  • Delayed language development
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Increased risk of obesity
  • Reduced attention span
  • Limited social skills
Research shows that early exposure to screens can have long-term impacts on cognitive and physical health.

Recommended Activities for Early Childhood

Instead of screens, WHO encourages:

  • Reading and storytelling with parents
  • Active play indoors and outdoors
  • Puzzles and creative play
  • Music and dancing
These activities not only support physical health but also strengthen parent-child bonding.

Tips for Parents to Reduce Screen Time

  • Be a role model by limiting your own screen use.
  • Create screen-free zones and times at home.
  • Encourage more interactive activities.
  • Avoid using screens as a way to calm or distract your child.

Long-Term Benefits of Limited Screen Use

Children who engage more in physical play and real-world social interactions:

  • Develop stronger problem-solving skills
  • Have better emotional regulation
  • Are more physically active
  • Show improved academic performance later on

A New World’s Knock! Scientists Discover a Planet That Could Make History

Published

on

A groundbreaking discovery has set the scientific world abuzz — astronomers have identified a new planet that might change how we understand our universe! This exciting exoplanet has sparked new hopes of finding life beyond Earth and rewriting space exploration history.

Where Was This Planet Found?

The planet was discovered using advanced telescopes and data analysis techniques from observatories across the world. It is located in the “habitable zone” of its star system, meaning conditions could be right for liquid water — a key ingredient for life.

Key Features of the New Planet

  • Similar size and composition to Earth
  • Orbits its star at an ideal distance to support moderate temperatures
  • Potential presence of an atmosphere
  • Evidence of water vapor in the atmosphere (still under study)

Could This Planet Support Life?

Scientists believe this new world could have the right conditions for microbial or even complex life forms. While nothing is confirmed yet, the possibility has generated immense excitement and inspired new research missions.

Why This Discovery Matters

This discovery is significant because it opens new possibilities in our search for life. It also challenges current models of planet formation and deepens our understanding of the universe’s diversity.

What Scientists Are Saying

Experts from NASA, ESA, and various global observatories are calling this a “once-in-a-generation” find. Astrophysicists suggest that this planet could become a major focus for upcoming missions.

How This Changes Our Understanding of Space

Finding a potentially habitable planet strengthens the theory that life-supporting worlds might be more common than we thought. It also pushes humanity closer to answering the age-old question: Are we alone?

Future Missions & Research Plans

Future telescope missions like the James Webb Space Telescope and upcoming ground-based observatories will target this planet for detailed atmospheric analysis and possible detection of biosignatures.
