Delhi Air Pollution Protest Turns Controversial Over Maoist Madvi Hidma Posters

Maoist Madvi Hidma Posters at Delhi Air Pollution Protest Spark Outrage; 15 Arrested for Assaulting Police

New Delhi:
A protest over Delhi’s worsening air pollution at India Gate on Sunday evening took a controversial turn when demonstrators displayed posters of top Maoist commander Madvi Hidma, who was killed in a police encounter in Andhra Pradesh last week. The appearance of Hidma’s image, accompanied by slogans allegedly praising him, has triggered a political firestorm and prompted police action.

Posters of Madvi Hidma Shock Protesters and Authorities

Videos circulating widely on social media show protesters near the C-Hexagon area raising slogans against Delhi’s toxic air. One demonstrator is seen holding a poster featuring a sketch of Madvi Hidma, one of India’s most wanted Maoist leaders, who carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore.

Hidma, the commander of CPI (Maoist)’s deadly Battalion 1, orchestrated several major Naxal attacks, including the 2017 Burkapal ambush, the 2010 Chintalnar attack, and multiple strikes on security forces across Bastar. He was killed in an encounter with Andhra Pradesh Police on November 18 in Alluri Sitaramaraju district.

Authorities have expressed confusion over why his poster appeared at a protest focused on Delhi’s air crisis, prompting political and law enforcement scrutiny.

Clashes Break Out; 15 Arrested

The demonstration, organised by the Delhi Coordination Committee for Clean Air, aimed to highlight hazardous pollution levels in Delhi-NCR. Tensions escalated when protesters blocked traffic and allegedly sprayed chilli powder on police officers attempting to disperse them.

According to police, several protesters refused to vacate the site, broke barricades, and sat on the road, obstructing emergency vehicles. Three to four officers sustained eye and facial injuries and were treated at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. In total, 15 protesters have been arrested for assaulting government officials.

Political Reactions: ‘New Face of Extremism’

Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra condemned the display of Hidma’s posters, calling it evidence of extremist infiltration under the guise of environmental activism.

“Posters in hand under the guise of pollution, Red Salute slogans on their lips… the new face of jihadis and Naxalites posing as social activists,” he tweeted.

Police are investigating how Hidma’s posters surfaced during the protest and whether there was an organized attempt to spread extremist messaging.

Madvi Hidma: The Shadowy Maoist Commander

Madvi Hidma, believed to be in his mid-40s, operated from the dense Sukma forests and was regarded as one of the most ruthless and tactically skilled Maoist commanders in India. He repeatedly orchestrated high-casualty ambushes against CRPF and police units, escaped multiple intelligence-led operations, led the CPI (Maoist)’s South Bastar operations wing, and trained new guerrilla recruits. His death last week is considered a major success for anti-Naxal forces.

Protest Hijacked by Controversy

The protest was intended to address Delhi’s “toxic air emergency,” with the AQI reaching the severe category in several areas. Organisers criticised authorities for relying on cosmetic measures such as water sprinklers and cloud seeding.

However, the sudden appearance of Hidma’s poster and the violent clash with police overshadowed the environmental message, raising concerns about potential extremist involvement.

Investigation Underway

Delhi Police DCP Devesh Kumar Mahla confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. An FIR has been registered under multiple sections covering assault on police, road blockades, and the display of the controversial posters. CCTV footage, social media videos, and the backgrounds of those arrested are being examined, with more arrests expected.

The incident has heightened concerns over political infiltration, security risks, and the misuse of civic protests in the capital.

Rajnath Singh Meets China’s Defence Minister in Bishkek, Discusses Regional Security

Published

on

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan):
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday held a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting in Bishkek.

The high-level interaction focused on regional security, stability, and strengthening military communication channels, at a time when both countries are cautiously working towards improving ties after years of tension.

Context: Relations After the 2020 LAC Standoff

The meeting comes against the backdrop of strained India-China relations following the 2020 clashes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, which marked one of the most serious military confrontations between the two nations in decades.

Since then, both sides have engaged in multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks aimed at disengagement and de-escalation. While some progress has been achieved, trust deficits remain, making such high-level meetings crucial.

Focus Areas of the Talks

During the discussion, both leaders are understood to have emphasized:

  • Maintaining peace and stability along border areas
  • Enhancing military-to-military communication mechanisms
  • Avoiding escalation through dialogue and confidence-building measures

The meeting signals a continued effort by both countries to manage differences while preventing conflict.

SCO Platform Gains Importance

The interaction took place during the Defence Ministers’ meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a key regional bloc founded in 2001 that includes major Eurasian powers such as India, China, Russia, and Central Asian nations.

The SCO platform has increasingly become a strategic space for dialogue, especially for countries with complex bilateral relationships.

India’s Stand on Global Security

Ahead of his visit, Rajnath Singh reiterated India’s commitment to global peace and stability.

He stated that India would:

  • Advocate zero tolerance for terrorism and extremism
  • Promote dialogue and diplomacy as primary tools for conflict resolution
  • Engage constructively with SCO member nations

Broader Global Context

This year’s SCO meeting is being held amid rising global tensions, particularly due to ongoing conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. These developments have heightened concerns about regional instability and geopolitical polarization.

In this context, discussions in Bishkek are expected to focus not only on regional issues but also on minimising the global spillover effects of ongoing conflicts.

India has consistently maintained that international disputes should be resolved through peaceful means. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also engaged with global leaders to push for diplomatic solutions and de-escalation.

Strategic Significance of the Meeting

The meeting between India and China’s defence ministers, though routine in format, carries significant symbolic and strategic weight. It reflects:

  • A willingness to keep communication channels open
  • Efforts to stabilise bilateral relations
  • Recognition of the need for cooperation in a volatile global environment

The Road Ahead

While challenges remain, continued dialogue at forums like the SCO suggests that both nations are prioritising stability over confrontation.

The outcome of such engagements may not lead to immediate breakthroughs, but they play a critical role in reducing tensions and building a framework for long-term peace.

Massive Dust Storm Hits Delhi-NCR; Airlines Issue Advisory Amid Weather Shift

Published

on

A powerful dust storm accompanied by strong winds swept across Delhi-NCR on Monday night, bringing sudden relief from prolonged heatwave-like conditions. The change in weather comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light rainfall across the region.

What Caused the Sudden Weather Change?

Weather experts attribute the dramatic shift to a developing cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining regions of northwest Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. This system is moving northeast, carrying dust and sand from arid areas into Delhi-NCR.

According to Skymet Weather meteorologist Mahesh Palawat, the disturbance is expected to influence Delhi’s weather until April 30, bringing:

  • Dust storms
  • Thunderstorms
  • Moderate rainfall
  • Strong winds

Temperature Likely to Drop

The weather activity is expected to bring down temperatures over the next few days. On Monday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 42.3°C, which was above normal.

Forecast for the coming days:

  • Minimum temperature: Around 28°C
  • Maximum temperature: Around 42°C (with expected gradual decline)
  • Continued chances of rain and thunderstorms through April 30

IMD Issues Yellow Alert

The IMD’s yellow alert—meaning “be aware and stay updated”—predicts:

  • Wind speeds up to 50 km/h
  • Light to moderate rainfall
  • Thunderstorms and dust storms

The alert is particularly emphasized for April 29, when weather activity may peak.

Impact on Air Travel

Airlines have warned passengers of potential disruptions:

  • IndiGo issued a travel advisory stating that thunderstorms and dust storms could affect flight departures and arrivals.
  • Operations may slow due to reduced visibility and strong winds.

Passengers are advised to:

  • Check flight status before leaving for the airport
  • Allow extra travel time
  • Stay updated via airline notifications

Air Quality and Conditions

Despite the dust storm, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category, with an AQI of 197. However, short-term deterioration is possible due to airborne dust particles.

Pre-Monsoon Activity Begins

Experts say this weather pattern is typical of pre-monsoon activity, which often includes:

  • Sudden dust storms
  • Thunder squalls
  • Brief but intense rainfall

Supreme Court of India Questions Rape Charge in Live-in Relationship Case, Emphasises Consent

Published

on

The Supreme Court of India made significant observations on consent and the nature of live-in relationships while hearing a case involving allegations of rape and assault arising from a long-term relationship.

The matter was heard by a bench led by Justice B. V. Nagarathna.

⚖️ Court Examines Nature of Relationship

During the proceedings, the court closely examined the timeline and nature of the relationship between the complainant and the accused:

  • Both individuals were adults at the time of the relationship
  • They had been in a long-term live-in relationship
  • The couple also had a child together

The bench questioned how a relationship that appeared consensual over a long period could later lead to allegations of rape.

🧭 Focus on Consent and Legal Threshold

The court highlighted the central role of consent in such cases:

  • A consensual relationship between adults does not automatically constitute a criminal offence
  • However, the court did not dismiss the complaint outright and indicated that facts and evidence must be carefully examined
  • It stressed that false promises of marriage, if proven, can still be relevant under criminal law

⚠️ Complexity of Live-in Relationships

The bench also commented on the broader challenges associated with live-in relationships:

  • Such relationships may lead to legal disputes after separation
  • Emotional and social complexities can influence post-breakup allegations
  • Courts must carefully distinguish between breach of promise and criminal intent

👩‍⚖️ Woman’s Claim and Court’s Response

The complainant’s counsel argued that:

  • The woman was allegedly unaware that the man was already married
  • The relationship was based on a promise of marriage, which was not fulfilled

The court acknowledged the argument but clarified that it would focus strictly on verifiable facts and legal standards in the case.

👶 Child’s Rights Highlighted

Importantly, the court emphasized that:

  • The child born from the relationship must be protected legally
  • A child’s rights are independent of the marital status of the parents

The court also indicated that the woman could seek legal remedies and support for the child’s welfare.

🤝 Suggestion for Mediation

Instead of prolonged litigation, the court suggested:

  • Exploring mediation or settlement
  • Reducing adversarial legal proceedings where possible

This reflects the judiciary’s increasing preference for alternative dispute resolution in sensitive personal matters.

📊 Legal Context

In Indian law:

  • Consent obtained under a false promise of marriage can, in certain circumstances, amount to rape
  • However, courts often examine whether the promise was genuine at the time or made with intent to deceive
  • Long-term relationships with mutual consent can complicate such determinations

✅ Key Takeaways

  • Supreme Court questioned the basis of rape charges in a long-term live-in relationship
  • Emphasized consent as a key legal factor
  • Highlighted complexities of relationships outside marriage
  • Stressed child’s rights must be protected
  • Suggested mediation as a possible resolution path
